I've got to say that I LOVE living in Australia. Beautiful weather, safe and free living - pretty much anything you could want to do or experience is here in Australia. Great beaches, great skiing, great forests and huge deserts. But what I really, really hate about Australia is the cost of imported electronic goods. The iPhone is a great case in point.

I am sick and tired or reading American reviews which mention that the new iPhone 3Gs costs US$199 for the 16 gig model and US$299 for the 32 gig model. And some of the reviewers say it's expensive! Well boo hoo to you Yanks!

Now I know that the Aussie dollar floats around the 80 cent mark against the Greenback - but come on. How do Apple justify charging over AU$850 for the 16 gigs iPhone 3Gs and almost AU$1050 for the 32 gig model? I'm getting spanked just for living down-under. It's not right, and is ripping off us poor Aussie consumers. You can visit the Apple store by clicking on the advert at the top of the page and see how the official pricing is tracking.

Many of you would have seen a wide array of iPod docs on the market these days, with all sorts of different gimmicks. Many of these units are great for playing back the music or movies on your iPod. Many people ask me if these units are also suitable for use with their iPhone. The answer is that some of the units are.

If you are purchasing a speaker dock for your iPhone, you need to make sure it is a shielded unit. Shielded units block out that annoying noise you often get through electronic equipment when your iPhone pings the phone network.

There are some great units around which you should check out if you want to get the most out of your iPhone.

Philips SBD8100

This Philips unit is a large unit but pumps out great sound and has a great feature which other units do not. As we all know, the iPhone can operation in both portrait and landscape mode, and switches seamlessly between the two orientations. But while landscape is fine for listening to music, you want the unit if landscape orientation if you're watching a movie. An this is where the SBD8100 shines. The dock connector rotates, allowing you to watch your favourite video clips or movies. The rotation function is motorised and the unit runs on a power supply or can run on batteries if your' on the go. The SBD8100 is a very stylish unit and would look at home on any mantle piece. It has a funky backlight to the docking mount. The Philips SBD8100 is a great unit and well worth a look if you're in the market for an iPhone desktop speaker dock. iPhoneFrenzy rates the unit at 8 out of 10.

Altec Lansing Inmotion MAX IMTt702

This is a pretty big unit, and you'd need a pretty large bag to carry it around it you wanted to take advantage of its stated portability. This unit has a built in FM radio and has a little slide out tray which holds your iPhone or iPod. The unit can really pump out the sound, with a reasonable high volume level, although a high volume there can be some sound distortion.

Great to move around the house with you as you go from room to room and runs on batteries or the included power supply. And of course, the music stops if you get a call. Doesn't have the funky dock rotation feature included with the Philips SBD8100, but not a bad unit all the same. iPhoneFrenzy gives this unit 7.5 out of 10.

Philips DC350

The last unit in this wrap-up is an iPhone docking station with speakers and an alarm clock. Billed as a music system for business executives, this tiny unit is a real gem. Its has a stylish look, and unlike the other systems we have looks at, has the speakers stacked vertically either side of the iPhone dock and not horizontally.

The DC350 accepts iPhone and iPod and has Bluetooth support, the clock radio and also a small, but extremely useful remote control unit. It has great sound and would look right at home on anyones desk, not just the business executive. The Philips DC350 is a little more expensive that some other units, but is added features make it well worth the money. It is an AC power unit only, however who needs a portable clock radio iPhone dock anyway! iPhoneFrenzy gives this unit a big tick, and 8.5 out of 10.

I have gone completely off topic a couple of times in the past, talking about the different software applications which were used to build this web site. Today, I want to share something with you which would be of great assistance to you if you want to build your own niche web site like this one (or perhaps even better).

Mark Hansen

One of the guys I follow pretty closely when it comes to building niche web sites using BANS and also Wordpress is Mark Hansen. Mark lives in Charlotte, North Carolina in the States and he has developed well over 100 of his own niche sites, plus provided a huge amount of advice to other web developers and marketers over the years. If there has ever been a reasonable criticism of the first and second generation iPhones, it has been that on some occasions they were a bit on the sluggish side. But the new iPhone 3Gs kills that issue well and truly. This is an iPhone on steroids! Check out the speed increase when compared to a second generation iPhone and a Blackberry. Amazing!

If it looks like an iPhone 3G, it must be an iPhone 3G. Right? Not so! Apple has just released the all new third generation Apple iPhone 3Gs (for speed) which looks just like your standard second generation unit – same screen, buttons, case etc. But it’s under the hood where the changes have been made. And it has been worth the wait.

Whilst you can download the new firmware for your second gen unit, you won’t have the required grunt to take full advantage of the new features. They say bigger is not always better, but who ever said that didn’t have an iPhone 3Gs. The processor clock speed has jumped from 412MHz to 600MHz, giving a huge boost in speed of two to 3½ times faster. The RAM has been doubled, increased up to 256MB and the internal storage has been increased to 16MB and 32MB respectively. The graphics chip has also been turbo charged giving amazing performance on new iPhone games.

But the improvements are not just in the micro-processing bits and pieces. The inbuilt camera has been given a major overhaul. The original two-mega pixel fixed-focus unit – always the subject of much derision has been replaced with a super three-mega pixel auto-focus camera. A great feature of this new camera is that you can automatically focus on any part of the scene simply by tapping the required spot on the screen. You also get an ultra-macro function for close up photography.

But that’s not all. The video has been upgraded to now record in VGA at 30 frames per second – not all that shabby! To top it off, you can also edit you movie right on the iPhone and then MMS it to your friends or upload it direct to YouTube.

One of the great new features probably sounds a bit odd on first blush, but it is an absolute corker. The iPhone 3Gs now comes with an inbuilt compass! An inbuilt magnetometer is able to sense the earth’s magnetic fields, which helps the compass determine directions. The compass is linked into Google Maps, which can keep you up to date on which direction you are travelling.

Another great feature that has been added to this already brilliant phone is voice control. Simple hold down the home button and you’re away. Want to call someone in your address book? Simply say their name and the number will be retrieved and dialed. If the contact has more than one number – say home, work and mobile, the tiny lady that lives inside the phone will ask you which you want and will dial the correct number for you. Or you can just say the number out load and it will dial. You can also use Voice Control to take charge of your iPod music library stored on your phone.

Also added is a basic function we have all cried out for – cut and paste. And quite an addition it is. Tap some text you want to cut and it will be selected. Expand or shrink the selection with the sliders and the go to the spot where you want the text and tap again – and there it is – just like magic. Not happy with the results? Just give your iPhone 3Gs a shake and the move will be undone.

Apple has done a fantastic job with this upgrade. Apps load and open faster, the whole unit is just more responsive and the new features and improvements to the old features make this the best Apple iPhone ever. If you’ve been putting off buying an iPhone you no longer have any excuses. The new Apple iPhone 3Gs is 10 out of 10.
