If it looks like an iPhone 3G, it must be an iPhone 3G. Right? Not so! Apple has just released the all new third generation Apple iPhone 3Gs (for speed) which looks just like your standard second generation unit – same screen, buttons, case etc. But it’s under the hood where the changes have been made. And it has been worth the wait.
Whilst you can download the new firmware for your second gen unit, you won’t have the required grunt to take full advantage of the new features. They say bigger is not always better, but who ever said that didn’t have an iPhone 3Gs. The processor clock speed has jumped from 412MHz to 600MHz, giving a huge boost in speed of two to 3½ times faster. The RAM has been doubled, increased up to 256MB and the internal storage has been increased to 16MB and 32MB respectively. The graphics chip has also been turbo charged giving amazing performance on new iPhone games.
But the improvements are not just in the micro-processing bits and pieces. The inbuilt camera has been given a major overhaul. The original two-mega pixel fixed-focus unit – always the subject of much derision has been replaced with a super three-mega pixel auto-focus camera. A great feature of this new camera is that you can automatically focus on any part of the scene simply by tapping the required spot on the screen. You also get an ultra-macro function for close up photography.
But that’s not all. The video has been upgraded to now record in VGA at 30 frames per second – not all that shabby! To top it off, you can also edit you movie right on the iPhone and then MMS it to your friends or upload it direct to YouTube.
One of the great new features probably sounds a bit odd on first blush, but it is an absolute corker. The iPhone 3Gs now comes with an inbuilt compass! An inbuilt magnetometer is able to sense the earth’s magnetic fields, which helps the compass determine directions. The compass is linked into Google Maps, which can keep you up to date on which direction you are travelling.
Another great feature that has been added to this already brilliant phone is voice control. Simple hold down the home button and you’re away. Want to call someone in your address book? Simply say their name and the number will be retrieved and dialed. If the contact has more than one number – say home, work and mobile, the tiny lady that lives inside the phone will ask you which you want and will dial the correct number for you. Or you can just say the number out load and it will dial. You can also use Voice Control to take charge of your iPod music library stored on your phone.
Also added is a basic function we have all cried out for – cut and paste. And quite an addition it is. Tap some text you want to cut and it will be selected. Expand or shrink the selection with the sliders and the go to the spot where you want the text and tap again – and there it is – just like magic. Not happy with the results? Just give your iPhone 3Gs a shake and the move will be undone.
Apple has done a fantastic job with this upgrade. Apps load and open faster, the whole unit is just more responsive and the new features and improvements to the old features make this the best Apple iPhone ever. If you’ve been putting off buying an iPhone you no longer have any excuses. The new Apple iPhone 3Gs is 10 out of 10.
