The rumour mill is running wild again with heaps of talk that Apple is going to release a ‘dumbed down’ version of the iconic iPhone. This wild story has been around since about 2007, but has yet to come to fruition.

Whilst the idea has some appeal, does anyone honestly expect the boffins at Apple to mess with the iPhone – the number one mobile phone on the planet? Look at the options.

  1. Make the iPhone smaller. Now as great as the iPhone is, some people complain that using the QWERTY keyboard is not all that easy. If you made the screen smaller, anyone with fingers thicker than match sticks would find it completely impossible to use the unit at all. Plus, one of the great attractions of the iPhone is the crystal clear, large size LCD screen. Do you really think Apple will mess with that? I don’t think so.
  2. Dumb the iPhone down. Again, one of the great attractions of the iPhone is the huge number of apps you can run on it, and also all the great things you can do with your iPhone straight out of the box. Take away those great features and what are you left with – a Samsung Omnia?

Probably the only area where an iPhone Nano would be a winner was if they could make the unit cheaper. I mean, it is a bit pricey as is (although there are always great iPhone bargains on eBay!). But cheaper generally means smaller or less features, so for me, let’s stick with the iPhone full strength.
